Project Overview
PROJECT TITLE: Demonstration of High-Speed Positive Train Control (PTC) System
Award Dates: December 30, 2004 - March 31, 2008
PROJECT REFERENCE SPONSOR: Federal Railroad Administration
PROGRAM MANAGER: Howard Moody
PROJECT MANAGER: Transportation Technology Center, Inc. (TTCI)
PROJECT
OBJECTIVE(S)
The objectives of this project are to enhance the efficiency and safety of rail freight and passenger operations. The program is in the public interest and will improve the safety of rail passenger and rail freight service and the safety of highway-rail grade crossings in the State of Illinois. The project will develop systems to activate highway grade crossing warning devices in the corridor. These devices will be upgraded to improve safety to the motoring public through other Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) sponsored programs and the PTC efforts will be a part of that effort. In addition, the program will result in safety improvements in passenger and freight operations, including reducing the risk of train-to-train collisions, over speed derailments and intrusions of trains into areas where railroad staff is maintaining the right-of-way. The technology used in the PTC project will be open and non-proprietary to the maximum feasible extent, and contribute to the creation and adoption of national railroad standards for interoperability of positive train control systems.
