Project Overview
PROJECT TITLE: Countermeasures To Reduce Suicides on Railway Rights on Way
Award Dates: September 11, 2006 - September 10, 2011
PROJECT REFERENCE SPONSOR: Federal Railroad Administration
PROGRAM MANAGER: William Browder
PROJECT MANAGER: Karen Marshall, American Association of Suicidology

PROJECT OBJECTIVE(S)

  • Determine the prevalence of and underlying causal factors for rail-related suicides. The purpose of the prevalence assessment is to better understand the scope of suicides and attempted suicides on railroad property, which will support the development of effective prevention strategies. Accurate documentation of the true extent of the problem will also provide an important baseline measure to help monitor rail suicide trends and help determine effectiveness of prevention strategies.
  • Develop effective measures to reduce the incidence of suicide along railway rights of way (including crossings).
